Season 1 - The story of Jerome Ali and his grassroots campaign to become mayor of his small rural town. Early in his campaign he enlists the help of his college friend and political consultant Sadie. In need of a speechwriter Sadie reaches out to a shark-like consultant and speechwriter named John Bearez and a clash of societal, racial and political identity ensues.
The opening episode of a political drama/comedy set in a small town. In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election Jerome Ali, a gay, Buddhist father of two, decides he needs to run for mayor. In this pilot episode he breaks that news to his husband, Gavin. We also meet Sadie, a Democratic consultant and Jerome's college friend.
In this episode we meet an angry and increasingly inebriated John Bearez, who gets into a fight with a Republican sympathizer. We also conclude Jerome and Gavin's discussion regarding their next move now that the country has blindsided them.
Sadie arrives in Jerome's small town for a visit and accepts his offer to help with his campaign. Bearez lay bare his feelings about the 2016 election and his fears about the future to anyone who will listen. The episode ends with Sadie reaching out to Bearez, seeking his speechwriting and political gifts for Jerome's modest campaign.
In this episode John Bearez makes his way to Jerome's small town. They meet and immediately experience friction and disagreement on how to proceed. Sadie attempts to keep the peace while also letting John know that she's not a fan of his current approach.
In this episode we meet Jerome's opponent, the politically shrewd Albert J. Dance. Bearez and Sadie also go over the finer points of Jerome's policies.
In this episode Sadie and Bearez meet with Jerome to further discuss Jerome's mayoral intentions. During a tense and difficult conversation their ideology clash comes to a head and, as a result, Bearez finds himself out of a job.
In this episode a jilted Bearez, while drinking alone, is approached by the town's incumbent Mayor, Albert J. Dance. They discuss Dance's opposition, and Bearez's former boss, Jerome Ali. They also discuss the possibility of John working for Dance.
In this final episode of the season Bearez comes back down to Earth and realizes that it's fear that has been driving him to vitriolic rhetoric and that fighting that fear is his only road to salvation. Thanks to Jerome, Bearez learns that good faith and a sincere desire to serve the public are what needs to be at the heart of a sincere campaign.
